To Littler too late

Luke Littler remains without a session win in the Premier League Darts after losing to Stockport’s Nathan Aspinall in the semi-finals, with Luke Humphries beating the Asp 6-3 in the final.

Luke ‘the nuke’ started the night in fine form putting on a masterclass over defending Premier League champion Michael Van Gerwen in the quarter finals. The 17-year-old averaged a staggering 114 and was a double 12 away from hitting a nine-dart leg to win the match.

But it wasn’t for lack of trying from Van Gerwen, with him averaging 110, the second highest losing average in the competition’s history. Despite three losses on the bounce the Green Machine still sits second.

Professional Darts Corporation: Night seven highlights

St Helens’ Michael Smith bowed out in the quarter finals to world number one Luke Humphries. The Bully Boy was comfortably second best, and despite reducing a 4-1 deficit to 4-4, the world number one Humphries ran out 6-4 winner.

World Matchplay champion Nathan Aspinall entertained Rob Cross in the quarters with the Asp edging past Cross in a 6-5 thriller. A 102 average and a 50% checkout rate wrapped up a solid performance from the Stockport man.

Aspinall met Luke Littler in the semi-finals in a hunt for his first ever win over the teenager. Littler failed to reach the standards he did in the quarter finals with Aspinall racing into a 5-2 lead.

In one of the tensest legs in Premier League history, Aspinall missed six match darts with Littler straying into the 20 to bust five and missing six darts at double before finally hitting double two to make it 5-3.

Unfortunately for the teenager it wasn’t to be. Aspinall would go onto hold his throw in the following leg and take the match 6-3, sticking his dart into double 12 and himself into his third Premier League final in four weeks.

In the final Aspinall faced World Champion Luke Humphries with the Asp unable to claim his second night win, losing 6-3.
