Shrimps fans protest against club's owner

Morecambe fans staged a protest against their owner’s refusal to sell the club before their home game against Wrexham last Saturday.

Shrimps fans lined the Morecambe promenade clad with flares, flags and banners reading ‘for sale’.

The Shrimps Trust said the protest was to “raise the profile of the fact that the club has been up for

sale for a very lengthy period of time.”

The protest comes after the club’s owner, Jason Whittingham had reportedly let several credible buyers walk away from negotiations after a breakdown in communications.

Jason Whittingham bought the club in 2019 but announced in 2022 that he was open to offers for the club. However, nearly two years on the Shrimps have been unable to secure a new buyer.

In December 2023 the club’s board placed on record their lack of confidence in Whittingham’s management of the sale process.

In the statement they noted the breakdown in communications between the owner and board, and demanded that any potential buyers go straight to the Board of Directors and not the owner.

In the four months since the board’s statement there have been no official bids for the Shrimps, and so the Shrimps Trust, a fan organisation working closely with the club decided to protest.

Charlie Quinn is a Morecambe fan who attended the protest on Saturday, and has spoken passionately about the owner, saying:

“The owners are a stain on our football club, if they’re not going to put any money in then they just have to sell, simple as.

“The protest was all about increasing awareness, the fans are basically begging for someone to buy the club, that’s what it is coming to.”

Despite the unrest Ged Brannan’s Morecambe side currently sit 11th in League Two, just a handful of points outside the play-off spots.
