British Caterham Champion Lewis Thompson all set to go again in 2024

Adam Clarke

What is Caterham racing we hear you ask. Well, the Caterham Seven UK Championship is the only nationally recognised top-tier Caterham racing series in Britain.

It is also one of the most competitive and exciting racing series’ in the world. With every car on the grid identical, it is a pure test of the drivers skill level.

Chorley born Lewis Thompson grabbed his opportunity at the highest level with both hands, winning the Championship in his first season. The 21 year-old has raced his whole life, but had to wait until this time last year for an opportunity so large.

However, he didn’t shy away from the jump up in standard, totting up a huge tally of 441 points in 21 races.

Caterham has a gruelling calendar with lots of travelling, and the reigning champion is ready to go again in 2024 – saying: “It was great to win the championship in my first season, it’s a really competitive field so that felt very good.

“I’m also confident we can back that title up this year, as long as we have a clean season with no mechanical issues and no crashes.”

In a sport where everyone’s equipment is identical, Lewis has already proven himself as one of the best drivers on the grid, adding: “Practice is going well so now we’re just raring to go, winning the championship again would be nice and I feel I have the ability to do that.

“I would consider myself as one of the best on the grid definitely.”

With the 2024 season drawing ever closer, let’s take a look at what’s to come.

Round one of seven gets underway on April 13 at Snetterton circuit, before the Championship heads to Zandvoort in Holland. Rounds three and four return to England, and support huge racing series’ such as the British Grand Turismo at Donington and the British Touring Car Championship at Oulton Park.

The latter stages of the season take place at Knockhill circuit and Brands Hatch circuit. Before the final races in the last round return to the famous Donington Park in October - where everything might be on the line for Lewis as he looks to be the first driver to go back-to-back in the series since John Byrne in 2020.
