WSL Weekend Derbies

Rio Blackburn

21 Mar 2024

The WSL plays host to two of the biggest rivalries in English Football this weekend, the Merseyside and Manchester derbies take place for the second time this season.

Manchester City are hot in pursuit of defending champions Chelsea, tied on 40 points at the top of the pyramid with only two goals separating the sides. Emma Hayes’ high flying Chelsea are the only English side still participating in the Women’s Champions League.

Manchester United are 4th in WSL with Liverpool sitting one place below them in 5th, only goal difference separates the two sides with the business end of the season among us.

Everton continue to struggle sat amongst the bottom four sides in the league, holding 9th position, eight points clear of the relegation spot occupied by Bristol City.

Manchester United vs Manchester City

The last time these two city-rivals locked horns we were treated to an enthralling 3-1 comeback win from Manchester City, courtesy of quick-fire goals from Jill Roord and Lauren Hemp, rounded off by Bunny Shaw after the break.

The last five meetings have been dominated by Manchester City, they won 2-1 at home back in January to knock the Red Devils out of the WSL League Cup. Although they have won three of the last five matches, the Blues have a tendency of letting the occasion take control, picking up red cards in back-to-back WSL games with United.

Manchester United bounced back from a draw away from home in game week 14 against Everton to keep their European hopes alive. They went onto beat Brighton and Bristol City convincingly in their last two fixtures and will look to continue their good run of form with a derby win.

Manchester City are currently the most in-form team in the league, winning all of their last five WSL games despite crashing out of the FA Cup and League Cup earlier this month. City have dropped points on only three occasions this season, a draw at home to champions Chelsea and two back-to-back losses to Brighton and Arsenal.

Manchester City are rightfully favourites for this clash, but derby day can provide magical moments and with only six games remaining, Manchester United are desperately keen to disrupt the noisy neighbours' title charge.

Liverpool vs Everton

Liverpool ran out victorious in the last Merseyside derby winning 2-1 away from home in the FA Women’s League Cup, goals from Sophie Haug and Yana Daniels wrapped up a dazzling display.

Despite losing the last fixture, the last five Merseyside meetings have been dominated by Everton, who’ve won two of the last three WSL games.

The Blues have won just one of their last five games, losing 2-1 to Aston Villa in their last fixture. A win against Villa would’ve pushed Everton into 7th place but a red card set them back, and the absence of key defender Elise Stenevik will be strongly felt in this upcoming derby.

Liverpool are clawing their way back up the table hot in pursuit of Manchester United, winning four of their last five WSL games. They fell short in the Women’s FA Cup earlier this month, beaten in the quarter-final at the hands of Leicester City. Level on points with Manchester United but six points separating the reds from a Champions League qualification spot currently held by Arsenal, every remaining game is crucial.
